Should I pluck the hair in my dog’s ears?

Keeping the ears plucked does lend to a neat and tidy looking dog.  But, besides looks, plucking your dog’s ears can have health benefits, as well.

  • Ear hair can prevent air flow into the ear canal which can lead to moisture or yeast build up which causes infection.
  • Foreign bodies, particularly grass seeds, can easily get caught up in the dog’s fur which can lead to infection.
  • Plucking ear hair also makes detecting any infections or problem in the ear canal much easier.  If such things go unnoticed, they can travel down the canal and cause major infections which could end up requiring expensive operations.

If you have specific questions about ear hair plucking, please contact Bellevue Animal Hospital at (419) 483-6345 or Sandusky Animal Hospital at (567) 256-3615
