Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It is a time to we give thanks for each other and treat those we love with special goodies. While this is wonderful for our human friends it is not always so great for our furry friends. In fact, some of the busiest days of the year are the days immediately following Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is due to all the “special goodies” that were so loving extended to our pets. Listed below are foods that are okay to use as special treats and foods that could send you on an unnecessary trip to the vet.
- Foods that are okay to give to your pet:
- Turkey
- Vegetables
- Plain mashed potatoes
- Beans
- Foods that are NOT okay for your pet:
- Turkey skin (fatty and hard to digest)
- Cooked bones (easily shattered and shards can get stuck in the intestines)
- Gravy (can cause diarrhea or vomiting)
- Onions, Garlic, Leeks, Scallions, etc. (can cause toxic anemia)
- Fatty Foods (can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive gas, and pancreatitis)
- Chocolate – including Baking Chocolate (can cause digestive issues, dehydration, excitability, slow heart rate, and allergic reactions)
Also, be careful to ensure that there is no aluminium foil, plastic, strings or any other form of packaging in any food given to your pet.
So, this Thanksgiving, instead of letting our pets in on our dinner, let’s let them in on a little extra love and attention!
